Magnesium is an essential mineral needed for hundreds of functions in our bodies. It’s one of the most common deficiencies seen in clinic, and we often use it to help with health conditions such as some cardiovascular diseases, migraines, stress and anxiety, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome, constipation, PMS, hypertension and many other problems.

Deficiency can be caused in many ways including low intake through food, lack of absorption into the body, increased excretion from the body; and particularly at this time of year it can be low because of increased stress, caffeine, soft drinks and alcohol which can all result in reduced magnesium in your body, and some medications can also have an effect.

Some signs that you might be deficient include muscle cramps or weakness, headaches, vertigo, chocolate cravings, anxiety, sleep problems, constipation etc. If you have any of these symptoms eat foods such as dark leafy green vegetables, beans and lentils, cocoa (dark chocolate), nuts and seeds and avocado.

If you’re concerned that you may have an ongoing deficiency speak to a qualified Nutritionist who can determine if you may need supplementation.
